Walk us through your career journey in the tech industry, from your first role to your current position.
I began my career as a tech support specialist and I’m now pursuing a career as a Linux administrator. I’ve spent the past five years working in the tech industry, and I’ve encountered many ups and downs in my journey. Each challenge has taught me valuable lessons, which I’ve used to continually improve myself and my approach to work.
I firmly believe that our past experiences are our best advisers, guiding us to focus on what truly matters in life. Continuous learning and having the confidence to take on challenges are essential for career growth and personal development. I’m incredibly grateful for where I am today and for those who’ve supported me along the way.
What initially drew you to pursue a career in technology, and how has that motivation evolved throughout your journey?
I was curious about how things work in a corporate environment. As a fresh graduate, I was eager to enter an evolving field with endless opportunities for learning and growth. In the beginning, my focus was on gaining technical skills and understanding the fundamentals. As my career advanced, I realized that technology is much more than just technical expertise—it’s about innovation, collaboration, and the potential to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives. The dynamic nature of the tech industry keeps me engaged, and my love for my job continues to grow as I embrace the challenges and opportunities that come my way.
Maintaining a healthy work-life balance can be challenging in the tech industry. How do you prioritize your personal life while excelling in your career?
I prioritize my personal life and career equally. My work hours are from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m., so I dedicate my mornings to nurturing my well-being with workouts, cooking, meditation, reading, etc. This routine allows me to stay focused and energized throughout the day. I make sure to take time off to spend with my family, so I stay connected with my loved ones.
What strategies have you employed to continually develop your skills and advance our career in the tech field?
Technology is all about staying updated. If we don’t update our skills, it’s difficult to remain relevant. I regularly enroll in training programs and pursue certifications relevant to my field to keep up on the latest developments and best practices. I actively participate in hands-on workshops, which offer insights from industry experts. I also use platforms like LinkedIn Learning to access a range of courses and tutorials.
Have you had any mentors or supportive figures throughout your career, particularly as a woman in tech? How have they influenced your journey?
I’ve been lucky to have a network of mentors and supportive people who have greatly influenced my journey. My husband has been a constant source of encouragement, giving me the confidence to pursue my goals and face challenges. My manager has also been essential, offering guidance, feedback, and opportunities that have helped me grow and advance in my career. My colleagues have created a supportive environment through collaboration and shared knowledge. Former managers and ex-colleagues have also impacted me, shaping my approach to problem-solving and career development. Each has played a key role in building my confidence, skills, and overall success.
Based on your experience, what advice would you give to other women aspiring to pursue a career in technology?
Stay confident and persistent. Believe in your abilities, and don’t be afraid to take on challenges or learn new skills. The tech industry is always changing, so stay curious and keep updating your knowledge. Build a strong support network by connecting with mentors and colleagues who can guide and encourage you. Most importantly, trust yourself, and remember that your unique perspective is valuable.
