CSC Provides Pathways to New Careers

Program offers personal growth opportunities as a way to help its people thrive

By Jeff Lyons, CSC Senior Communications Specialist

Jennifer Giroso and Jayuan Moore already had jobs at CSC and wanted to try something new. The longtime employees liked the company and its people-centric culture, so rather than look elsewhere for growth opportunities, they turned to CSC’s Career Pathways program.

The program offers a clear way for employees to transition from one area of expertise to another, which helps the company continue to strategically develop its workforce and meet business needs. There are currently two career pathways—associate software engineer and associate technical business analyst—that require specified training or a specific level of technical expertise. Program participants build a defined skill set through formalized training and move into their new role within three months to a year.

Jennifer started her CSC career in 2018 as a customer service representative for the Annual Reports Team. But she had always been interested in coding and computers. After seeing an email about the associate software engineer career pathway, she was intrigued and decided to apply. She was accepted into the program and completed the training, which included an intensive 12-week coding camp. In September 2021, Jennifer began her first tech job at CSC as an associate database administrator, where she was part of an Oracle upgrade.

Her career growth didn’t stop once she completed the pathway program. Jennifer says the Enterprise Technology Team began testing an automation effort about a year into her tenure with the database team. People in tech roles throughout the company joined the program for a quarter to get an idea how to automate for their own teams. “When I went into that automation project, it really stuck with me. After my second quarter with the project, it became an official team. I talked to my leader and told them the job felt like a really good fit for me.” She became a software engineer on the initial product delivery team in April 2023 and has been there ever since.

“The cool part about my current job, aside from the coding, is working with different teams across Enterprise Technology on all sorts of products,” she says. “It’s a great opportunity to learn from these experts in those systems and products—it’s almost like an extension of the bootcamp that taught me a lot of coding.” Jennifer looks at what she’s learning like a puzzle, where she figures out how to fit the pieces together to automate different processes. “While I enjoyed my time in customer service, coding felt like the end goal for me.”

Jayuan has held a number of different roles since starting at CSC in 2015. He’s worked in records, entity management support, and annual reports. He’s now a technical business analyst (BA) for the Citizen IT Team, where he makes updates to Salesforce.

He says he turned to the career pathways program because, while he enjoys working at CSC, he was ready to pursue an interest in technology. “Once I learned the details about the associate technical BA career pathway, it really appealed to me,” he says. “It was a matter of me wanting to better myself and the environment around me.”

After interviewing and being accepted into the Associate Technical BA career pathway, Jayuan began his new role in 2023 and completed Villanova’s Business Analyst Certification as well as on-the-job training on his new team.

In his new position, Jayuan says, people come to him with new features they’d like to see in Salesforce. “It’s my job to put their idea into fruition, if it’s feasible,” he says. “I enjoy the process—seeing an idea that turns into an actual feature in Salesforce that will save the user time in their daily functions. I like being part of the change.”

Jayuan says anyone looking to grow their career has to be prepared for some challenging moments. “If you want to be great, you’re going to go through things that are uncomfortable, because you’re learning something completely new,” he says. “But then you figure it out, and it helps you grow.” Tenacity is one of CSC’s Core Values, and setting people on a path for career growth is part of the company’s employee value proposition.

Jennifer recommends taking advantage of opportunities like career pathways, especially if you’re looking to make a career change. “Once I started learning coding and different languages, it gave me confidence, and I knew this was the right path forward for me,” she says. “I’m fortunate to be at a company that offers these types of resources to invest in myself.”
