What is your full title and how long have you been in your current position?
I’m a Vice President in India and work for the Fund Solutions business unit. I work for a U.S.-based private equity client we’ve been associated with for the past three years. Prior to being with CSC, I was part of the client’s organization for more than five years.
I was with the private equity fund for eight years, and I was able to leverage that experience to set up the team and bring in the talent and capability that’s required to offer our services for accounting and reporting. Now I lead a team of 40 people spread across the country in three cities.
Why did you choose to work for CSC?
I was an account manager for the private equity client when its captive unit was seamlessly transitioned into Intertrust Group. At the time there were just 16 of us. The client was looking for a partner who understood scalability and could bring in efficiency. They wanted to drive change and growth seamlessly as we brought the two cultures together. This worked well because both cultures are genuinely people driven.
In two years, we grew the team to 40 people and brought it up to speed with the services that we offer. We’ve built trust and confidence in partnership with the client and created a strategic outsourcing model.
What has your career growth looked like at CSC? Is there a particular person who has helped you?
I was lucky to transition seamlessly from one good organization to another organization. I’ve had mentors along the way. I’m thankful for my previous manager (part of the private equity group) who helped me grow into a good leader. I acquired a lot of leadership skills along the way because of the challenges and situations that came up. Those experiences and mentoring provided perspective about how to shape my career to reach the next level and kept me progressing along the path.
When I was transitioning to Intertrust and CSC, my immediate manager, Raghunathan and his manager, Venkat, were supportive. In that situation, it was essential to have someone to check in with every step of the way. Our open-door policy here is effective, especially at the senior management level. People can brainstorm and talk through their ideas, and we’re very solution driven at the same time.
What makes your team different?
Our team of 40 is structured in a way that each member handles a specific function and service line for the client and functions as the subject matter expert. That’s what we strive for—it’s not just the “how” of doing things someone needs to learn, it’s also the “why” of our processes. We take a deliberate approach to training. We don’t just deep dive into processes, we help new associates understand how they interact with the client and support them as they grow more comfortable.
One strength of our team is that we keep everyone included in our decision-making process and remain transparent about changes. That helps keep everyone motivated and builds trust throughout the team. Additionally, we believe in empowering next level team members and women employees to be able to grow as good leaders with their proactive ideas and long-term commitment which continues to inspire fellow colleagues.
Other than the people, what do you love most about the culture here?
Something that I value about this company is that it promotes diversity and inclusion and gives a sense of belonging to every person working with CSC. It’s not just because it’s people driven, but it’s also open to differences in culture, races, and types of people. In addition to my business unit role, I’m also the strategic equity alliance lead for the diversity and belonging group in India. Promoting diversity and belonging is my passion and I want to see it implemented strategically across such areas as recruitment and talent. We ensure that within our region, we source key talent with a balance between men and women, and other minority groups.
What is it that brings you in every morning, excited to be there?
It’s all about team collaboration, right? I think team collaboration is exciting now because after the pandemic everyone wants to come back to office and at the same time maintain a work life balance. I’m excited that I can plan a flexible week and go to work in the office three days and work from home two days. I have the flexibility to manage my personal agenda as well as my professional agenda.
What are you learning now, and why is it important?
For anyone in the financial services sector and working with fund solutions, it’s important to be up to date with the technology that’s evolving along with the needs of our clients. They’re looking for a partner who is solution driven, and CSC has always promoted technology efficiency as the core for any business. I’m refreshing my understanding of our technologies and learning new tools.
When you tell people about your job, what’s one thing that surprises them, or gets them excited about the work you do?
I think the dual roles that I play in terms of handling a private equity fund as an account manager plus acting as a diversity and inclusion specialist and subject matter expert. It surprises and excites them to see that someone can perform a core financial job as well as do something that is passion driven—and that the organization is offering the opportunity to do so.
What is the work-life balance like?
What works for our team is that even though we’re supporting a U.S. client, we don’t work a U.S. shift or a graveyard shift. We work a U.K. shift, which starts midday and ends by 9 p.m. our time. For me, this means I have the whole morning with my daughter. I spend time with her, drop her off at school, and manage any personal commitments.
The timing works to create work-life balance for me. Plus working in the office three days a week is productive. You can get a lot done in person in office as well as flexi hours from home. That flexibility and the 12-9 p.m. shift attracts talent and provides good overlap with our U.S. client as well for calls and giving them status updates.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to join CSC or your team?
I’d tell them CSC is a great place to work, and that we’re goal oriented. Our organizational goals are well stated and relayed to associates by our business unit leads in a way people can understand and apply to the creation of their own measurable goals. This allows every employee to develop their career path and have transparent communication with their manager about where they want to be. The combination of CSC being a goal-oriented, people-centric culture and the open-door policy is attractive to many people.
I would also mention the success of our integration, which has been seamless and, for many of us, very insightful. The CSC brand is really big globally, and I want potential recruits to realize that we are still growing in terms of client base and head count as well. It’s beautiful, really, how we work across borders, different time zones, different cultures, and we’re all able to work together and successfully integrate into a global powerhouse.
