Alyssia Pasquarella

It starts from the top down. The direct leaders I’ve worked under at CSC reflect that style, by always giving me opportunities to grow and find roles that excite me and allow me to grow my strengths.

What’s your title and how long have you been with CSC?

I’m a Facilities Team leader, managing a team of global workflow coordinators. We coordinate the processes and procedures that are in place to support our global teams in running the engine daily. Any kind of process or ticketing system, health and safety processes, and audits come through the Workflow Coordinator Team. I have workflow coordinators reporting to me in both EMEA and India regions. I’ve been with CSC for seven years.

I started as a Facilities coordinator managing four Wilmington locations. After about two to three years, I started managing some of the global locations remotely from Wilmington and contributing to processes and the documentation of them. When we acquired Intertrust Group and inherited a larger global footprint and a facilities team across the world, I moved into a workflow coordinator position, managing the workflows of the Wilmington team. I also was afforded the opportunity to work with our colleagues from the Intertrust side to help train them on how we do things in Facilities at CSC, which was different in some respects to what they had been doing.

What did you do before you joined CSC?

My degree is actually in nursing. I was working at Christiana Hospital in Newark, Delaware, before I took this role. I left nursing because of the work-life balance. Having little kids at home and working nights, holidays, and birthdays, I found that the schedule just wasn’t very family-friendly, and I was looking for a company that valued work-life balance.

What transferable skills did you bring with you?

The main one would be customer service. Taking care of your patients is no different than taking care of your colleagues. When complaints or issues are reported to us, we triage them the same way at CSC as we did at the hospital, where urgent matters get the utmost attention.

What makes your team different?

We’re small but mighty. When I was hired, we were a three-person team led by a facilities manager supporting more than 40 CSC locations globally. Now, in Wilmington alone, we’ve grown to eight people, with an even larger global team and footprint due to the Intertrust acquisition. What makes Facilities different is our customers are not external clients. They’re not companies coming to us asking us to be their registered agent, asking for our services or help. Our clients are our colleagues, who we work side by side with every day. Customer service is truly important to us because we can’t duck and dodge people in the hallways. We work with our clients and across departments daily.

What gets you excited to start your day?

Coming in and getting to work with people across the globe. It’s exciting enough I have a team here that’s very close—we treat each other like a family. But on top of that, having colleagues across the globe that we celebrate holidays and milestones with, learning about their cultures and why their holidays are important to them, is truly inspiring and educational all on its own.

What surprises people when you tell them about your job?

They’re usually surprised to learn that working in Facilities is really office management and not just maintenance. I try to explain that I take care of our colleagues’ experience each day, beginning from the workstations where they sit, to the lighting and temperature in their offices, down to the process they follow for an evacuation in case of an emergency. We handle the health and safety of each building as well as the necessary training to make sure our work areas are safe. It’s actually really hard to explain what we do, because we do a little bit of everything. Facilities manages everything that impacts the employees, from the guard you see when you walk in the building in the morning, to the cafe attendant at lunch, to the badge you use to visit the fitness center or another CSC office.

What makes you stay?

The leadership here is very transparent. The CEO delivers messaging on the performance of the company, and he doesn’t sugarcoat things, and he’s very open and honest. My leadership as a whole has been very gracious in allowing me to identify courses that’ll help grow my career path, even if it’s not within Facilities. There are always plans for allowing us to continue to learn and expand our education. It’s huge when leadership and an organization believes strongly enough in their talent to invest the time and money into growing them.

Since I’ve been here, I’ve received my facilities management professional (FMP) certification. After five years of experience and having the FMP designation, I was allowed to sit for the proctored certified facilities management exam, which shows superiority in the field of facilities management. These opportunities were offered through employment with CSC and the leadership of the Facilities department.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to get a job at CSC or join your team?

Be direct, open, and honest. Be honest about your skills, what you bring to the table, and what you have to offer. No one on our team came from a facilities or trades background. We all had transferable skills that made us a good fit for the team. If you have customer service skills and you’re detail-oriented, you’d be a great fit for our team. Project management is also a large part of my team’s role and is an easily transferable skill, because we treat everything we do as a project. Even if it’s just drafting a communication, there’s a start, a process to follow, and a deadline to meet.
